Is Dark Mode Better for Your Eyes?

Sometimes. In a dark room, dark mode narrows the brightness gap between your screen and everything around it, and that is a real comfort win. In a bright room, or across a long stretch of small dense text, light mode usually wins. Dark mode changes how much light reaches you. It does not change the quality of that light, and it does not protect your eyes from damage.
That is the short version. The rest of this page covers what the published research actually measured, who each mode suits, and the one situation where switching to dark mode makes things worse instead of better.
What dark mode actually is
Dark mode flips your interface from dark text on a light background to light text on a dark background. Vision researchers call the first arrangement positive polarity and the second negative polarity, and that distinction carries more weight than the marketing around dark mode suggests.
What changes when you switch: the average amount of light leaving your panel during text work. The background is most of what you are looking at, and the background is now dark.
What does not change: your backlight or panel brightness setting, and the color temperature of the light itself. A white pixel in dark mode is the same roughly 6500K white pixel it was in light mode. Dark mode just puts fewer of them in front of you.
What the research actually found
Most articles on this question run on vibes. Two lines of published work are worth knowing, and they do not point the same way.
A 2025 crossover study in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health put 30 tablet users through an hour in each mode, split between 30 minutes of gaming and 30 minutes of reading. Self-reported visual fatigue rose significantly after both modes, and the gap between light and dark mode was not statistically significant. Dry eye symptom scores went up more after light mode than after dark mode. The authors concluded that dark mode "may help reduce the risk of eye fatigue" compared with light mode. Read it with the limits in view: every participant was a woman aged 18 to 25 with normal vision, and the exposure was a single hour. Sengsoon and Intaruk, IJERPH 22(4):609.
On the reading side, the lean goes the other way. Piepenbrock, Mayr and Buchner ran a series of display polarity studies and found pupil size was smaller and proofreading performance better with dark text on a light background, with the advantage strongest at small character sizes. The proposed mechanism is mechanical rather than mysterious: a brighter overall display constricts the pupil, a narrower pupil produces a sharper retinal image, and fine detail gets easier to resolve. Put the two together and you get a usable rule. Dark mode tends to win on symptom comfort, dryness in particular. Light mode tends to win on reading accuracy for small text. Neither line of research says dark mode protects your eyes from harm, and we are not aware of any that does.
Who dark mode helps
People working in dim or dark rooms
A white document in a dark room creates a wide luminance gap between the screen and the space around it. Your pupils keep adapting every time your gaze moves off the screen and back. Dark mode narrows that gap. This is the clearest case for it, and it is the reason the "does dark mode help eye strain" question gets a yes so often from people who work at night.
Late-night coders and writers
Terminals, editors and IDEs are mostly background, so they get the biggest luminance reduction from a dark theme. If you are working past midnight, dark mode plus a warmed screen plus brightness matched to the room does more for you than any one of the three alone. If bright screens bother you, whether from migraine sensitivity, dry eyes, or plain preference for a dimmer display, dark mode is often more comfortable no matter the room. Menus, dashboards, chat, file browsers. Reading accuracy barely matters here and comfort does, so dark mode costs you nothing.
Who tends to do worse in dark mode
People reading dense text at small sizes
This is the positive polarity finding in practice. If you read long documents at a small font in a normally lit room, light mode is likely the better setting. Before you switch modes, try raising the font size, which addresses the same problem more directly.
People who notice halation
Halation is the smeared glow some people see around light text on a dark background. It is reported more often by people with uncorrected astigmatism, though it is a common observation rather than a settled finding. The test takes ten seconds: if white text on black looks slightly blurry or bloomed to you and black text on white looks crisp, keep light mode for reading. It is also worth ruling out an outdated prescription with an eye care professional.
Anyone in a bright room or near a window
In a well lit office, your screen is often dimmer than the room already. The problem there is glare, a color temperature mismatch with the room light, or focusing fatigue. Dark mode does not touch any of the three, and it can cost you legibility as reflections wash out a dark background.
Anyone expecting it to cover the whole screen
Dark mode only reaches apps that implement it. Video, photos and a large share of the web look identical either way, so a browser in dark mode still hands you a news site's white page. Does dark mode reduce blue light?
Not the way most articles imply. Dark mode reduces the amount of light coming off the panel. It does not change the spectrum of the light that still comes off it.
Your screen sits near 6500K by default, the blue-white of midday daylight. That stays at 6500K in dark mode. What drives circadian timing is the short-wavelength content of that light, which the melanopsin-containing cells in your retina respond to most strongly near 480nm, and dark mode leaves that content untouched. Fewer bright pixels means less total exposure, which helps, but it is a volume control, not a filter.
Changing the spectrum takes a color temperature adjustment: macOS Night Shift, Windows Night Light, or Circadian Shield, all of which shift the screen toward warmer tones on a schedule and all of which run independently of your dark mode setting. Dark mode on OLED, and the flicker catch
Nobody writing about dark mode mentions this one, and for a slice of readers it is the whole answer.
On an OLED panel, black pixels are switched off entirely, so a dark interface genuinely emits less light rather than just looking like it does. The catch sits in how OLED panels dim. Many switch from DC dimming to PWM dimming at lower brightness, cycling the pixels on and off rapidly to produce a dimmer image while keeping color accurate. As brightness drops the duty cycle shortens, meaning more off time per cycle, and the flicker gets stronger.
Dark mode nudges the panel toward that lower operating range. So if you switched to dark mode for comfort and came away with headaches or a heavy-eyed feeling instead, flicker is the first thing to test, not the last. The practical move is to raise hardware brightness into a safer PWM range and take the brightness back down in software instead.
How to turn dark mode on
Windows 11: Settings, then Personalization, then Colors, then set "Choose your mode" to Dark. Windows 10 puts the same control under Settings, Personalization, Colors. Neither one changes color temperature, which lives separately under Night light in Display settings. macOS: System Settings, then Appearance, then Dark. Choosing Auto switches you at sunset and back at sunrise, which is worth turning on even if you are otherwise happy in light mode.

What to pair with dark mode
If the goal is a screen you can sit in front of all evening:
- Keep dark mode on where it earns its place, mainly editors, terminals and interface-heavy apps in low light. Switch to light mode for long reading.
- Add a color temperature schedule. Night Shift and Night Light cover the basics. Dark mode and a color temperature filter are complementary. Dark mode reduces interface luminance, which a filter does not do. A filter warms the spectrum, which dark mode cannot do.
