How to turn on the blue light filter in Windows 11
Night Light is the Microsoft name for the built-in filter. There is no separate download and no extra setting buried in the registry.
- Open display settings. Right-click anywhere on the desktop and choose Display settings. Or open Settings, then System, then Display.
- Switch on Night light. The row sits near the top of the Display page. Flip the toggle and the screen warms immediately.
- Set the strength. Click the Night light row itself to expand it, then drag the Strength slider. Low settings are barely visible. Most people who bother turning it on end up past halfway.
- Give it a schedule. Turn on Schedule night light and choose Sunset to sunrise or Set hours. Sunset to sunrise needs Windows location access, otherwise the option stays grayed out and you have to enter times by hand.
- Add a one-key toggle. Windows key plus A opens Quick Settings, which has a Night light tile. Handy when you need true colors for ten seconds to check a photo.
If the toggle is grayed out entirely, that is almost always a display driver problem rather than a Windows one. Updating the GPU driver from the vendor rather than through Windows Update fixes most cases.
How to turn on the blue light filter in Windows 10
Same feature, one extra click. Open Settings, then System, then Display, and switch on Night light. Then click Night light settings underneath the toggle to reach the strength slider and the schedule. Windows 10 also gives you a Night light tile in the Action Center, again on Windows key plus A.

Windows 7, Windows 8, and older builds
There is no built-in option. Night Light arrived with the Windows 10 Creators Update in 2017, so anything older has never had a first-party blue light filter. If your main monitor is a bright IPS panel and your second is a dimmer laptop screen off to the side, the same setting lands very differently on each. Matching them by eye means picking a compromise that suits neither. It does not reduce brightness

It follows a clock, not the sky
Sunset to sunrise is closer to useful than fixed hours, but it is still a two-state switch: filter on, filter off, with a short fade between them. Real twilight is a gradient that plays out over an hour or more, and its timing shifts week by week with your latitude. A December evening in Toronto and a June evening in Toronto are not the same lighting problem.
The strength scale is not tied to anything measurable
The slider has no numbers on it. You cannot ask for 2700K, and you cannot tell whether the setting you picked actually cuts the wavelengths that matter. The blue that affects circadian timing peaks around 480nm, hitting melanopsin in the ipRGC cells of your retina, and the standard for measuring that exposure is Melanopic EDI under CIE S 026, not a slider position. It does nothing about flicker
Covered next, because on Windows hardware this is the gap that catches the most people out.
PWM flicker: the Windows-specific part nobody mentions
Plenty of Windows laptops and monitors dim their backlight by switching it on and off rapidly rather than by actually lowering its output. That technique is PWM, pulse-width modulation, and the lower you drag the brightness the longer the off periods get. Some people never notice. Others get eye ache or a dull headache after an hour and assume it is blue light, then turn the filter up and wonder why nothing improves.

If you are on Windows at 1am with a terminal open, a generic evening filter is the wrong shape for the problem. Syntax highlighting depends on hues you do not want flattened, and a heavy warm cast turns blue keywords into mud. A few things that help more than cranking the strength slider:
- Warm the display gradually across the evening rather than in one step at sunset, so your eyes are never adapting to a sudden shift mid-task.
- Keep some room light on. A bright screen in a pitch-dark room is a contrast problem, and lowering screen brightness to compensate is what drags PWM panels into their worst range.
- Set the warmest levels for reading and review passes, and ease off when you genuinely need color fidelity.
- Take the break seriously, not the filter alone. The 20-20-20 rule does more for focus fatigue than any color setting.

Does any of this actually help you sleep?
Partly, and it is worth keeping the claim honest. Evening exposure to bright, blue-heavy light is associated with delayed melatonin onset. Chang and colleagues (PNAS, 2014) found that reading on a light-emitting device before bed delayed melatonin release by roughly 1.5 hours compared with a printed book. A 2019 meta-analysis by Tahkamo and colleagues found the effect is dose-dependent and varies a lot between individuals.
